The
5th version of the Chilean Music Awards, given out
this year as part of the new institutional framework,
recognized the band Los Jaivas -in the popular field-,
composer Luis Advis -in the classic- and Illapu,
in the folkloric.
The recent approval
of the Chilean Music Promotion Act, highlighted
the new cultural order within which this Chilean
Music Awards were given. President Ricardo Lagos
and Culture Minister, José Weinstein, gathered
with several musicians and artists at the presidential
house of La Moneda. The popular music Award went
to the band Los Jaivas, while Luis Advis stood out
in the classic field, and the folklor Award went
to Illapu. Besides a diploma, the winner in each
cathegory recieved a check for $7.710.667 (US$13,500).
The jury highlighted Luis
Advis´ continuous commitment to Chilean
music, and his work in the fusion of classic and
folkloric elements, besides his several academic
investigations. Los Jaivas stood out for creating
"a music very much our own, very Latinamerican,
which combines rock and folklore, and stays in
force 40 years since its birth", in the words
of Minister Weinstein. Illapu got the Award for
their several contributions as composers and interpreters,
and because "their compositions have given
our music an unexpected richness". All those
awarded are musicians from the province: Iquique
(Luis Advis), Antofagasta (Illapu) and Valparaíso
(Los Jaivas).
The jury was composed by nine
members, among them folklorist Margot Loyola,
Gastón Guzmán, orchestra director
Fernando Rosas, Minister of Culture José
Weinstein, Fernando García, Rodrigo Flores,
Francisco Nieto, singer Gloria Simonetti and composer
Vicente Bianchi. The head of the jury is Eduardo
Carrasco, now musical director for Culture´s
National Council.
