With
a budget of 15,000 million pesos they will be concreted
the initiatives for recuperating the City's coastal
line, put the main road and square back in shape,
make new walking paths, parks and roads. It is an
effort from the central, regional and city governments
that does not include fresh money but the prioritization
of resources, as the Housing and Urbanism Minister,
Jaime Ravinet, explained during his visit to Punta
Arenas.
"For
some strange reason, the Spaniards and Chileans
from previous centuries decided to build their cities
with their backs to their most important geographical
characteristic", said the Housing and Urbanism
Minister, Jaime Ravinet, when presenting the projects
by which the capital of the Twelfth Region will
celebrate the Republic's Bicentennial. Ravinet mentioned
that Iquique, Arica, Antofagasta and Valparaiso
all closed their coastal border, the same as Punta
Arenas.
His second goal will be to potentiate the historical
center and preserve its architectural heritage.
The third, to give importance to public spaces.
He wants the southern city to recuperate its walking
path of Roca Street, and for that has a budget of
84 million pesos. To build the Chabunco Park they
will be invested 210 millions. Other projects include
the Muñoz Gamero Square, the Río de
las Minas walking path and the Punta Arenas ring
road. It will also be open the coastal road of the
Magallanes Straits and the Bicentennial Square.
The former Municipal Market building will also be
restored.
"We also think Punta Arenas needs a new port
terminal. We hope that for the year 2010 it will
already be built the Arturo Prat pier", Ravinet
said. The Minister explained that the central, regional
and local governments were giving resources for
a total of over 15,000 million pesos, not including
the money for the pier.
"We are channeling public resources to potentiate
the city development and revalorization of its historical
role as Patagonia´s main urban center and
the entrance door to the Antarctica", he said.
Ravinet explained that this was not "fresh
money", but the result of a shared effort.
The Minister made a brief visit to Punta Arenas
to inaugurate several works, including the Regional
Museum, the first step of the Eduardo Frei Montalva
Avenue and of the Chiloe Archipelago Neighborhood,
which includes over 2,000 new social houses.
