In Santiago and Colchagua: Exhibit of Violeta Parra's
textiles
The
chance of appreciating in the best of conditions
such a valuable and yet unknown work is part of
the relevance of the exhibit of textiles done by
the Chilean artist Violeta Parra, just inaugurated
by the City of Santiago.
There has been some
criticism already, but it does not affect Milena
Rojas, Violeta's granddaughter, who got the support
from the Cardoen Foundation and the City of Santiago
to restore and exhibit the textiles. She says the
initiative is "a dream come true", and
thanks the interest shown by Santiago's mayor, Joaquin
Lavin, and businessman Carlos Cardoen, "who
helped us after we had made several intents and
knocked hundreds of doors".
The works are practically unknown for the Chilean
public and were exhibited during the 60s at the
Paris' Louvre Museum and other museums around the
world.
During our summer of 2003, the textiles will be
moved to Vichuquen's Cultural Museum for then being
kept at the old Parra's house, in Carmen 340, where
it will now be located the Violeta Parra Museum,
dedicated to her plastic work. Besides the textiles,
the composer and singer also did oil paintings,
works in papier maché, embroideries and tapestry.
The Museum will also keep photos and personal objects
left by the artist.
